Bolor-Erdene's family lives behind Elsen Tasarkhai, at the foot of the Khugnu Tarna mountains. The camp is around 7 km from the sand dunes, but the dunes are not what define the setting here: from the family's gers, the open steppe runs toward the mountains and the nearby Erdene Khamba monastery.
