About GerBnB: Real Ger Stays With Nomadic Families in Mongolia

GerBnB is a hands-on booking platform for authentic ger (yurt) stays with nomadic herder families in Mongolia, built around two goals: helping herder families welcome guests into gers they already keep as a small, discoverable source of income, and connecting travelers with real, unfiltered nomadic experiences. This page explains how we operate, who we serve, and what we don't pretend to be.

01Founder Story

Why GerBnB exists

GerBnB was built around a simple preference: we think real gers — lived in and maintained by herder families — are gems of Mongolian culture and should be easier for people to experience. Camps and hotels absolutely have their place, and each type of stay has its own benefits, but our focus is on authentic family gers as a way of life, not as a themed room. At the same time, we know that not every ger is somewhere we'd personally want to sleep. We've traveled widely and have basic standards for cleanliness, safety, and comfort wherever we stay. GerBnB exists to apply those standards to nomadic stays and to make it easier for guests to find real, lived-in gers that feel both genuine and reassuring.

02What We Are

Who GerBnB is for: two travelers, one platform

GerBnB is built for two kinds of travelers on one platform: Mongolian families who want ger stays to be realistically affordable and accessible — not just a high-priced camp — and visitors from abroad discovering the steppe for the first time. For locals, a few nights in a ger should be a normal option, whether they're escaping polluted city air for a weekend or stopping somewhere familiar on a regular seasonal route. Most of the gers listed on GerBnB are not "built for tourism" — they're the extra gers herder families already keep for relatives and friends who visit. We help hosts turn that existing space into a small, discoverable source of income. For foreign travelers, we serve people moving overland by motorbike or car who need a reliable shelter and recharge point, as well as those who specifically want to stay, see how herding works, immerse themselves, and help with herding tasks such as milking, pasturing, and making milk products, and spend time on the open steppe. In both cases the idea is straightforward: make real, lived-in gers easier to book in a way that feels honest, practical, and supportive of nomadic households.

03How We Vet

How we vet nomadic camps — no star ratings, on purpose

We don't rely on star ratings yet — at this stage they wouldn't mean much. Instead, we do the homework ourselves: spending hours and days on the road, visiting each camp in person, meeting hosts, talking through how they live and host, and looking closely at the basic amenities. Only the gers that meet our baseline for location reliability, cleanliness, water safety, and straightforward hospitality go live on the platform. If a ger is listed on GerBnB, it means someone from our team has actually been there and would be comfortable staying there themselves. It's slower than a self-serve signup form, but it's also why guests can choose any of our gers with a clear mind about the basics being in place.

Baseline criteria

CleanlinessClean enough that we'd sleep there ourselves
WaterSafe, drinkable water or a clear boiled-water routine
LocationRealistically reachable for travelers
HospitalitySimple, genuine hospitality from the host family
04Trust & Safety

What we promise, and what we don't

We promise something simple: a real nomadic household, not a tour script — a host family who knows you're coming and a bed ready for you, in a ger that exists for their own life first, not for a brochure. The experience follows real herder routines and seasons, not a fixed schedule, so what you see is daily life in its normal, unedited form. What we don't promise is control over everything around that life. Weather, livestock movements, road conditions, and wildlife are part of the steppe, not something anyone can guarantee or smooth out on demand. Awareness and preparation — clothing, timing, insurance, and personal risk decisions — stay in the traveler's hands. When things shift unexpectedly, we and the hosts will try to help within what's realistically possible on the ground, but we won't pretend the countryside behaves like a city hotel.

Notes on GerBnB

  • I am truly grateful to the GerBnB team for making this unforgettable experience possible. GerBnB gave me the opportunity to stay with Batzaya and his family and experience their everyday life in a way that I could never have arranged on my own. The team was also very kind and supportive throughout the whole process. When I had difficulty finding my host at Erdenet train station, they responded immediately, contacted the host, and kept me updated until we were able to meet. Their quick and thoughtful support made me feel reassured, especially as I was traveling alone in an unfamiliar place. What I appreciate most about GerBnB is that it connects travelers with real families and gives us the chance to experience Mongolia not simply as tourists, but through the lives of the people who call it home. I would definitely use GerBnB again and highly recommend it to anyone who wants to experience Mongolia beyond ordinary sightseeing. Thank you to the entire GerBnB team for connecting me with Batzaya and his wonderful family.
