One night in a Mongolian ger does not need a huge hiking pack. A few things are still worth bringing, even in summer.
The main difference from a hotel is simple: you are going to the steppe and staying with a real nomadic family. There is no shop around the corner, and the weather can change a lot in a few hours.
Pack a small kit ahead of time. It makes the first overnight much calmer.
In short
For a night in a ger (yurt), bring warm clothes, comfortable waterproof shoes, a flashlight, a power bank, a sleeping bag, toiletries, any medicine you need (antihistamines if you have allergies, just in case), water, and a small stash of food that does not need special storage. Before you go, read the listing for the ger you booked on GerBnB: conditions differ from household to household.
Warm clothes, even in summer
The first thing to put in the bag is a warm layer.
On the Mongolian steppe, temperature can swing hard through the day. A hot sunny afternoon does not mean a warm evening.
For a summer overnight, these usually help:
- a warm sweater or fleece;
- long trousers;
- warm socks;
- a light jacket, ideally windproof.
In spring and autumn, treat clothing more carefully: weather can turn quickly.
Do not pack only from the Ulaanbaatar forecast.1 Conditions on the steppe can differ a lot.
Sleeping bag (recommended, not required)
Even when hosts provide sheets and warm blankets, the GerBnB team recommends bringing your own sleeping bag.
It is not a requirement. If you do not have one, do not cancel the trip: many households provide everything you need for sleep.
Your own bag adds comfort and is especially useful at more remote camps.
Before you book, read the listing on GerBnB for the sleep setup at that ger. More on what camps usually have and what the first night is like is in the related entries.
Flashlight (a headlamp beats a phone)
One of the simplest things people forget.
The toilet is usually separate from the ger, and after sunset the steppe is genuinely dark. A phone light works, but a small headlamp is better: your hands stay free.
It also helps for moving around camp in the evening.
Keep the light somewhere you can reach fast, not buried at the bottom of the pack.
Power bank and charger
Even when a household has electricity, charging depends on the specific setup. Some places have ordinary sockets, some have a dedicated charging spot, and power may come from solar panels, batteries, or a generator.
Bring a charged power bank either way.
It helps outside the ger too. Drives across Mongolia can be long, and you cannot always charge a phone on the road.
If you bring a camera, drone, or other gear, charge the batteries before you leave.
Check charging options for that household on the GerBnB listing.
Water (boil local water)
Households may take water from a well, a stream, or a local river. The source depends on the place and is usually named on the GerBnB listing.
We recommend boiling any of that water before you drink it.
For the road, bring your own bottle — better a larger jug if the drive is long.
Toiletries (there may be no shower)
Not every household has a full shower.
Some have a shower; some use a basin for washing; in summer, with the right conditions, people wash in a river. On a drive through a town you can also use a public shower.
So bring a small kit of your own:
- toothbrush and toothpaste;
- wet wipes;
- sanitizer;
- a small towel;
- the other toiletries you use every day.
On the steppe you often cannot buy the brands you know,2 so take what you need before you leave.
Personal medicine
Bring every medicine you take regularly.
Even for a single night.
The nearest pharmacy3 can be tens of kilometers away, so do not plan to buy what you need on site.
A small travel kit of the remedies you usually bring on trips is fine. If you have allergies, pack antihistamines just in case.
Food for evening and breakfast
Buy evening food in advance. After you reach camp, the nearest shop may be far, so do not count on buying everything there.
Self-cooking and available kitchen tools differ from family to family. Check the listing for the ger you booked on GerBnB before you go.
Breakfast also depends on the household. Some places may offer a glass of fresh milk or other simple food in the morning; others cook a full hot breakfast. Check meals on the listing, or ask the GerBnB team ahead of time.
If you have allergies, a special diet, or strict food limits, say so early and bring the food you need.
Comfortable shoes (waterproof if it has rained)
You do not need to buy trekking boots for one ordinary overnight.
But shoes should be comfortable on dirt, grass, and uneven ground.
Do not plan to stay inside the ger the whole time. Most guests want to walk around the camp, look at the animals, or step out onto the steppe in the evening.
If it has rained recently, ordinary city sneakers can be a poor choice — waterproof shoes are better.
Sun protection
Open steppe means a lot of sun and little shade.
In summer, bring:
- sunscreen;
- a hat;
- sunglasses.
Even for one night, part of the day is outdoors.
A small gift for the hosts (optional)
A gift is not a condition of staying on GerBnB, and nobody expects one.
If you want to bring something for the family, a small gesture is welcome. Sweets, something for the kids, or a small souvenir from home all work.
Do not turn it into a required packing step. The gesture matters more than the cost.
What you can leave at home
For one overnight you usually do not need to buy special trek gear just for the trip.
Do not pack “just in case” as if this were a self-supported expedition.
It is more useful to read the specific ger before you book. On GerBnB the listing shows the amenities, so you can see what that household actually needs.
Checklist before you leave
Before the drive, quickly check:
- warm sweater or fleece;
- long trousers and warm socks;
- comfortable shoes;
- sleeping bag;
- flashlight;
- phone and charger;
- charged power bank;
- water bottle;
- toiletries;
- personal medicine;
- sunscreen and a hat;
- evening food, if you need it;
- a small gift for the family, if you want one.
Most important: open your ger’s listing on GerBnB once more before you go. Shower, electricity, internet, charging, meals, and other everyday details depend on that household.
Ready for the first night?
There is no single pack list that fits every ger in Mongolia. Some camps feel closer to a familiar country house; others are much more self-reliant.
Decide which amenities matter to you, then pick a household on GerBnB that matches.
